4. Sur Dynasty after Sher Shah (1545–1555 CE)

Definition & Introduction

After Sher Shah Suri’s death in 1545 CE, the Sur Empire continued under his successors. While Islam Shah Suri tried to maintain his father’s legacy, subsequent rulers were weak, leading to internal conflicts and the eventual restoration of the Mughal Empire under Humayun in 1555 CE.

1. Islam Shah Suri (1545–1554 CE)

  • Real name: Jalal Khan; son of Sher Shah Suri.
  • Continued his father’s administrative and military reforms.
  • Maintained law and order but lacked Sher Shah’s charisma.
  • Suppressed revolts by Afghan nobles and consolidated authority.
  • Rebuilt forts and strengthened postal and communication systems.
  • Patronised scholars and built mosques.

2. Weak Successors (1554–1555 CE)

  • After Islam Shah’s death, his 12-year-old son Firuz Shah Suri became ruler, but was murdered soon after.
  • Hemu, a Hindu general and wazir under Afghan rulers, emerged as a key military leader.
  • Multiple claimants to the throne: Muhammad Adil Shah, Ibrahim Shah Suri, and Sikandar Shah Suri.
  • Civil wars between Afghan chiefs weakened the empire.

3. Decline of the Sur Empire

  • Internal rivalry among Afghan nobility.
  • Loss of centralised control over provinces.
  • Rise of regional forces in Bengal, Punjab, and Bihar.
  • Opportunity for Humayun to return from exile with Persian support.

4. Role of Hemu

  • Hindu general who served under Adil Shah Suri.
  • Won several battles against regional rivals.
  • Controlled Delhi for a short period after Humayun’s death (as the chief minister for Sur remnants).
  • Later defeated by Akbar at the Second Battle of Panipat (1556 CE).

Administration & Reforms under Successors

  • Islam Shah continued revenue policies of Sher Shah.
  • Focused on maintaining forts and security.
  • However, later rulers abandoned strict governance, leading to corruption and instability.

Bihar Relevance

  • Bihar remained the political base for Afghan rulers even after Sher Shah’s death.
  • Civil wars among Afghan chiefs directly involved territories in Bihar.
  • Sasaram continued as a site of Sur dynasty heritage.

Current Affairs (till Aug 2025)

  • Bihar government promoting Sasaram as a key historical tourism hub.
  • Conservation of Islam Shah-era mosques underway.

Quick Revision Points

  • Sher Shah succeeded by Islam Shah Suri (1545–1554 CE).
  • Civil wars weakened the empire after Islam Shah’s death.
  • Hemu played a major military role.
  • Empire collapsed, enabling Humayun’s return.

One-Page Rapid Revision Summary

After Sher Shah’s death, Islam Shah Suri preserved the Sur Empire’s strength but his successors failed to maintain unity. Internal conflicts, weak leadership, and the rise of ambitious nobles like Hemu led to the collapse of Afghan power. The political instability allowed Humayun to regain the Mughal throne in 1555 CE, ending Sur rule in Delhi.
