1B Teaching Models
Teaching Models
- Pedagogy
- Concept:
The term Pedagogy originates from the Greek words “Paid” (Child) and “Agogos” (Guide), meaning “to lead the child”.
It refers to the science and art of teaching children, where the teacher imparts knowledge, values, and skills. It is generally a teacher-centered approach, with the teacher controlling the learning process. - Objectives:
- To provide basic knowledge, values, and culture to learners.
- To develop discipline and good habits.
- To simplify learning according to the child’s level of understanding.
- Characteristics:
- Teacher-centered approach
- Child seen as a dependent learner
- Focus on memory, discipline and moral training
- Evaluation based on right/wrong answers
- Role of Teacher:
The teacher acts as the knowledge provider and authority. He/she decides what to teach and how to teach. - Role of Student:
The learner is a passive receiver who follows the teacher’s instructions and memorizes information. - Examples:
- Teaching alphabets, numbers, or rhymes at the primary level
- Traditional classroom lecture-based teaching
- Limitations:
- Does not encourage creativity or critical thinking.
- Students become over-dependent on the teacher.
- Limited in modern learner-centered education systems.
- Concept:
- Andragogy
- Concept:
The term Andragogy originates from Greek “Andr” (Adult) + “Agogos” (Leader/Guide), meaning “to lead the adults”.
The concept was first introduced by Alexander Kapp (1833) and later popularized and systematized by Malcolm Knowles (1968).
It focuses on adult learners, who bring prior experiences and prefer self-directed learning. - Characteristics:
- Learner-centered approach
- Learner as active, self-directed participant
- Practical, relevant, problem-solving focus
- Teacher as facilitator or mentor
- Key Features of Adult Learning (Malcolm Knowles):
- Adults prefer self-directed learning.
- They bring prior experiences to learning.
- Adults want problem-centered, not content-centered learning.
- Adults need to know the purpose and utility of learning.
- They learn best when learning is relevant to personal/professional life.
- The process is learner-centered, where the learner plays an active role.
- Adults are goal-oriented learners, focused on achieving specific objectives.
- Role of Teacher:
The teacher acts as a facilitator and mentor, helping learners connect learning with their prior experiences and current needs. - Role of Student:
The learner is active, independent, and self-directed, learning according to needs and focusing on solving real-life problems. - Examples:
- Adult literacy programmes
- Skill development training
- Online professional courses
- Limitations:
- Not all adults are equally self-directed.
- Formal guidance may still be required.
- Cultural and motivational differences may hinder learning.
- Concept:
- Heutagogy
- Concept:
Heutagogy comes from Greek “Heuta” (self) and “Agogos” (to lead), meaning self-determined learning.
It emphasizes that learners determine what, how, and why they learn. The concept was introduced by Stewart Hase and Chris Kenyon (2000). - Objectives:
- To give learners maximum autonomy and freedom.
- To promote lifelong learning and adaptability.
- To encourage research, innovation, and creativity.
- Characteristics:
- Completely learner-centered
- Learner determines their own learning needs, resources and evaluation methods.
- Focus on capability development (not just competence).
- Flexible, technology-driven and research-oriented.
- Role of Teacher:
The teacher acts only as a facilitator/mentor, providing resources and guidance, while the learner decides the path. - Role of Student:
The learner is independent, self-determined, and proactive, setting their own learning goals and finding ways to achieve them. - Examples:
- MOOCs and online self-paced courses (like Coursera, edX, SWAYAM).
- Independent research projects.
- Lifelong skill learning (coding, designing, entrepreneurship).
- Limitations:
- Not all learners are equally disciplined or motivated.
- Difficult for beginners.
- Requires high self-regulation and digital access.

Cognition
- Definition:
Cognition refers to the mental processes through which we acquire, process, store, and use information. It forms the basis of thinking, understanding, learning, problem-solving, and memory. Cognition is not limited to acquiring knowledge but also involves the ability to process that knowledge and apply it in new situations. - Key Components of Cognition:
- Perception: Acquiring information through senses and giving it meaning.
- Attention: Focusing mental resources on specific information.
- Memory: Storing information and retrieving it when needed.
- Learning: Acquiring new knowledge or skills through experience or study.
- Thinking: The process of analyzing and solving problems.
- Language: Communicating ideas and information.
- Problem Solving & Decision Making: Evaluating options and selecting the best one.
- Types of Cognition:
- Concrete cognition: Related to real objects and experiences.
- Abstract cognition: Through ideas, principles, and symbols.
Cognition is foundational for learning and adapting to the environment. In psychology, cognitive processes are studied to understand how humans perceive, think, remember, and solve problems.
- Example:
A child is reading a book and understanding the meaning of words. He is processing and remembering information.
Explanation: Here, the child is just thinking and understanding (Cognition). He is not yet reflecting on how well he is learning.
Metacognition
- Definition:
Metacognition is the ability to reflect on, monitor, and regulate one’s own cognitive processes. In simple terms, it is “thinking about thinking.” It plays a crucial role in learning and problem-solving because it helps an individual recognize and improve their thinking and learning strategies. - Importance of Metacognition:
- Improves learning ability.
- Enhances problem-solving.
- Promotes self-regulation and strategic thinking.
- Increases chances of success in complex tasks.
Metacognition enables learners to become self-regulated learners, who can assess their understanding, adjust strategies, and improve performance.
- Key Components of Metacognition:
- Metacognitive Knowledge: Knowledge about one’s own thinking and learning abilities.
- Knowledge about self
- Knowledge about tasks
- Knowledge about strategies
- Metacognitive Regulation: Regulating and adapting one’s cognitive activities.
- Planning: Preparing strategies for learning or problem-solving.
- Monitoring: Checking one’s understanding and progress during the process.
- Evaluating: Assessing one’s performance and strategies at the end.
- Metacognitive Knowledge: Knowledge about one’s own thinking and learning abilities.
- Example:
The same child thinks while reading, “Did I understand this part correctly? If not, I will read it again.”
Explanation: Here, the child is reflecting on and regulating his own thinking, which is Metacognition.

- Traditional classroom teaching where teacher lectures and students listen
- सीमाएँ:
- Creativity और critical thinking को प्रोत्साहन नहीं मिलता।
- विद्यार्थी शिक्षक पर अधिक निर्भर रहते हैं।
- आधुनिक learner-centered शिक्षा में यह मॉडल सीमित है।
- अवधारणा:
- वयस्क शिक्षा / Andragogy
