Energy Conversions
Introduction
Energy conversion refers to the process of changing energy from one form to another โ for example, mechanical to electrical, or chemical to thermal.
No energy is created or destroyed (as per the law of conservation of energy) โ it only transforms.
In Bihar, energy conversions are crucial in:
- Solar energy schemes (solar to electric)
- Biogas plants (chemical to heat)
- Agricultural pumps, hydel power (mechanical to electric)
Major Types of Energy Conversions
1. Mechanical Energy โ Electrical Energy
- Devices: Electric generators, hydroelectric plants, wind turbines
- Example: Water falling from a dam turns turbines โ generates electricity
๐ PYQ (BPSC): What is the function of a generator? โ Converts mechanical energy to electrical energy
2. Chemical Energy โ Electrical Energy
- Devices: Batteries, cells, fuel cells
- Example: Car battery converts chemical energy to electric to start the engine
3. Electrical Energy โ Mechanical Energy
- Devices: Electric motors, fans, pumps
- Example: Ceiling fan converts electricity into rotational motion
๐ Expected MCQ: Electric motor converts which energy? โ Electrical to Mechanical
4. Chemical Energy โ Heat & Light Energy
- Example: Burning of fuel, LPG stove, wood combustion, explosions
5. Solar Energy โ Electrical Energy
- Devices: Solar panels, photovoltaic cells
- Sunlight โ Electric current
- Used in rooftop solar, solar lamps, PM-KUSUM scheme in Bihar
๐ Expected MCQ: What do solar panels convert solar energy into? โ Electrical energy
6. Light Energy โ Chemical Energy
- Process: Photosynthesis in green plants
- Light energy stored as glucose
7. Heat Energy โ Mechanical Energy
- Devices: Steam engine, thermal power plant
- Heat from fuel boils water โ steam โ rotates turbine
๐ Expected MCQ: In a steam engine, heat energy is converted to? โ Mechanical energy
8. Sound Energy โ Electrical Energy
- Devices: Microphone, voice sensors
- Sound vibrations โ electric signals
9. Electrical Energy โ Heat & Light
- Devices: Heaters, bulbs, toasters
- Resistance of wire causes heat/light
๐ PYQ (BPSC): What energy conversion takes place in an electric bulb? โ Electrical to Heat and Light
10. Nuclear Energy โ Heat โ Electrical Energy
- Process: Nuclear fission in power plants
- Nuclear energy โ heat โ steam โ turbine โ electricity
- India has nuclear plants (e.g. Kaiga, Narora); Bihar exploring future projects
Energy Conversions in Daily Life
- Torch: Chemical (battery) โ Electrical โ Light
- Hydel Dam: Potential โ Kinetic โ Mechanical โ Electrical
- Car Engine: Chemical (fuel) โ Mechanical (movement)
- Electric Iron: Electrical โ Heat
- Photosynthesis: Light โ Chemical
- Speaker: Electrical โ Sound
- Solar Cooker: Solar โ Heat
Bihar-Specific Applications
- BREDA projects: Solar to electric in rural areas
- Hydroelectric stations: Mechanical to electric (e.g. Kosi basin potential)
- Biogas plants: Organic chemical energy โ Heat for cooking
- Electric pumps in agriculture: Electric โ Mechanical
- Smart Grids: Manage efficient conversion and usage
Law of Conservation of Energy
- Energy can neither be created nor destroyed
- It only changes from one form to another
- Total energy before and after conversion remains the same
๐ Expected MCQ: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed โ this is the law of? โ Conservation of Energy
PYQs + Expected MCQs
๐ PYQ (BPSC): What energy change occurs in an electric bulb? โ Electrical to Heat and Light
