Human Reproductive System

Reproductive System

Male

  • Testes: Paired organs in scrotum; produce sperm and testosterone.
  • Epididymis: Stores and matures sperm; connects testes to vas deferens.
  • Vas Deferens: Transports mature sperm to urethra during ejaculation.
  • Prostate Gland: Secretes alkaline fluid; nourishes, protects sperm.
  • Sperm: Male gametes; carry genetic material; motile via flagellum.
  • Testosterone: Hormone; regulates sperm production, secondary sexual characteristics (e.g., voice deepening, muscle growth).
  • Cowper’s Gland: Neutralizes acidic urine, lubricates urethra.

Female

  • Ovaries: Paired organs; produce ova (eggs) and hormones (estrogen, progesterone).
  • Fallopian Tubes: Transport ova to uterus; site of fertilization; internal fertilization.
  • Uterus: Muscular organ; supports embryo/fetus during pregnancy.
  • Endometrium: Inner lining; thickens for implantation, sheds during menstruation.
  • Vagina: Connects uterus to exterior; birth canal; receives sperm.
  • Ovum: Female gamete; non-motile; released during ovulation.
  • Estrogen/Progesterone: Regulate menstrual cycle, pregnancy, secondary sexual characteristics (e.g., breast development).
  • Menstruation: Monthly shedding of endometrium if no pregnancy occurs.
  • Ovulation: Release of mature ovum from ovary (~day 14 of cycle).
  • Nourishment: Provided through chorion, amnion & placenta.

The human reproductive system ensures the continuation of species by enabling reproduction.
It includes specialized organs that produce gametes (sperm and ova) and support fertilization, pregnancy, and childbirth.
In Bihar, issues like maternal mortality, adolescent pregnancy, and reproductive awareness are important public health concerns.

1. Male Reproductive System

Major Organs:

  • Testes: Produce sperm and the hormone testosterone
  • Scrotum: Pouch that keeps testes at lower temperature
  • Vas deferens: Carries sperm from testes to urethra
  • Prostate gland and seminal vesicles: Add fluids to sperm to form semen
  • Penis: Organ for sperm delivery

πŸ“ PYQ: Male reproductive gamete? β†’ Sperm
πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Hormone responsible for male traits? β†’ Testosterone

2. Female Reproductive System

Major Organs:

  • Ovaries: Produce ova (eggs) and hormones – estrogen, progesterone
  • Fallopian Tubes: Site of fertilization
  • Uterus: Site for embryo implantation and fetal development
  • Cervix: Connects uterus to vagina
  • Vagina: Birth canal

πŸ“ PYQ: Site of fertilization in females? β†’ Fallopian Tube
πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Hormone regulating menstrual cycle? β†’ Estrogen

3. Fertilization & Development

  • Fertilization = Fusion of sperm and ovum in fallopian tube
  • Forms a zygote β†’ divides to form embryo β†’ implants in uterus
  • Pregnancy lasts ~9 months (280 days)
  • Placenta: Connects mother and fetus for nutrients and waste exchange

πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Fertilized egg is called? β†’ Zygote
πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Duration of normal human pregnancy? β†’ 9 months

4. Puberty

  • Onset of sexual maturity
  • Male: ~13–15 yrs β†’ Growth of facial hair, voice change
  • Female: ~10–13 yrs β†’ Menstruation begins, breast development
  • Controlled by pituitary hormones and sex hormones

πŸ“ Expected MCQ: First menstruation is called? β†’ Menarche

5. Menstrual Cycle

  • Monthly cycle (~28 days) in females
  • Hormonal regulation by FSH, LH, Estrogen, and Progesterone
  • Phases: Menstrual β†’ Follicular β†’ Ovulation β†’ Luteal
  • Absence of fertilization β†’ shedding of uterine lining (menstruation)

πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Hormone that triggers ovulation? β†’ LH (Luteinizing Hormone)

6. Reproductive Health & Bihar Relevance

  • High maternal mortality in rural Bihar due to lack of access to care
  • Early marriage and low awareness β†’ adolescent pregnancy
  • Diseases like PCOD, UTIs, STDs underreported in rural women
  • Govt programs:
    • Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)
    • RKSK (Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram)
    • ASHA workers for rural awareness

πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Program promoting safe childbirth in Bihar? β†’ Janani Suraksha Yojana

PYQs + Expected MCQs

πŸ“ PYQ (BPSC): Site of fertilization in females? β†’ Fallopian tube
πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Organ producing sperm? β†’ Testes
πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Female hormone for pregnancy maintenance? β†’ Progesterone
πŸ“ Expected MCQ: Placenta helps in? β†’ Nutrient exchange between mother and fetus

Quick Revision Points

  • Male: Testes β†’ Sperm + Testosterone
  • Female: Ovary β†’ Egg + Estrogen
  • Fertilization β†’ Fallopian Tube
  • Pregnancy β†’ Uterus β†’ Placenta support
  • Menstrual cycle = ~28 days
  • Bihar: Focus on maternal care, teen awareness, health schemes
  • JSY, RKSK, ASHA β†’ ensure safe reproduction in rural areas
