Pollution

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment, causing adverse effects on living organisms and natural systems.
It affects air, water, soil, and noise levels, and has become a major issue in urban Bihar, especially Patna, which ranks among India's most polluted cities.

Types of Pollution

1. Air Pollution

  • Caused by: vehicular emissions, industrial smoke, burning of garbage, construction dust
  • Major pollutants: PM2.5, PM10, CO, NOโ‚‚, SOโ‚‚
  • Effect: Asthma, lung disease, poor visibility

๐Ÿ“ PYQ (BPSC): Which gas is a major pollutant from vehicles? โ†’ Carbon monoxide

2. Water Pollution

  • Caused by: sewage discharge, industrial effluents, agricultural runoff
  • Affects rivers like Ganga, Sone, Koshi in Bihar
  • Causes: cholera, typhoid, eutrophication, aquatic death

๐Ÿ“ PYQ (CDPO): Polluted water causes which disease? โ†’ Cholera

3. Soil Pollution

  • Caused by: pesticides, industrial waste, plastic dumping, e-waste
  • Effect: Reduces soil fertility, harms crops, groundwater pollution

๐Ÿ“ Expected MCQ: What leads to soil pollution in agriculture? โ†’ Excessive pesticide use

4. Noise Pollution

  • Caused by: vehicles, loudspeakers, construction, industrial noise
  • Effect: Hearing loss, stress, hypertension

๐Ÿ“ PYQ: What is the permissible noise level in residential areas (day)? โ†’ 55 dB

5. Thermal Pollution

  • Caused by: discharge of hot water from factories into rivers
  • Affects aquatic ecosystems

Major Pollutants and Their Sources

PollutantSourceEffect
PM2.5 / PM10Vehicles, dustLung disease
CO (Carbon Monoxide)Incomplete combustionReduces oxygen in blood
NOโ‚‚ / SOโ‚‚Factories, vehiclesAcid rain, breathing problems
LeadOld batteries, paintsBrain damage
PesticidesAgricultureSoil and food contamination

Bihar-Specific Pollution Issues

๐Ÿš— Air Pollution in Patna

  • Patna ranked among top 10 polluted cities (PM2.5) in India
  • Reasons: Vehicle congestion, dust, biomass burning

๐ŸŒŠ River Pollution

  • Ganga, Koshi, and Sone rivers polluted due to untreated sewage
  • Ganga Action Plan and Namami Gange implemented in Bihar

๐Ÿงช Industrial and Urban Waste

  • Industrial units near Barh, Muzaffarpur, Begusarai release untreated effluents
  • Solid waste mismanagement in cities like Patna and Gaya

๐Ÿšœ Agriculture

  • Use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides leads to groundwater and soil pollution

๐Ÿ“ Expected MCQ: Which river in Bihar is most affected by pollution? โ†’ Ganga
๐Ÿ“ Expected MCQ: Which Bihar city is highly air polluted? โ†’ Patna

Government Schemes & Initiatives

  • National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) โ€“ Implemented in Patna and Muzaffarpur
  • Namami Gange โ€“ River cleaning and sewage treatment
  • Bihar Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission โ€“ Conservation of water and plantation
  • Pollution Control Board โ€“ Bihar (BSPCB) โ€“ Monitors air and water quality

๐Ÿ“ Expected MCQ: Which scheme targets cleaning of Ganga in Bihar? โ†’ Namami Gange

Effects of Pollution

  • Health: Respiratory illness, cancer, hearing loss
  • Environment: Acid rain, climate change, reduced biodiversity
  • Economy: Health costs, loss of agricultural productivity
  • Cultural heritage: Corrosion of monuments and temples (e.g., Golghar)

Prevention and Control Measures

  • Use of CNG, electric vehicles
  • Rainwater harvesting, plantation drives
  • Proper waste segregation
  • Ban on single-use plastics
  • Pollution monitoring by government labs and satellite tools

PYQs + Expected MCQs

๐Ÿ“ PYQ (BPSC): Which gas causes maximum air pollution? โ†’ Carbon monoxide
๐Ÿ“ PYQ (CDPO): Which river is most polluted in Bihar? โ†’ Ganga
๐Ÿ“ Expected MCQ: Which agency monitors pollution in Bihar? โ†’ BSPCB
๐Ÿ“ Expected MCQ: Major air pollutant in cities? โ†’ PM2.5
๐Ÿ“ Expected MCQ: Which city in Bihar has high AQI? โ†’ Patna
