Detergents

Detergents are synthetic cleaning agents that remove dirt and grease, even in hard water.
Unlike soaps (which are made from fats and oils), detergents are made from petrochemicals and acids.
Detergents are widely used in households, laundries, and industries, especially in places where hard water is common, including many parts of Bihar.

Composition of Detergents

  • Made from:

    • Petrochemicals or sulfonated long-chain hydrocarbons
    • Sulfuric acid derivatives
    • Additives like enzymes, fragrances, bleaching agents
  • Do not form scum in hard water like soaps

  • Contain hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails like soaps

  • Effective in both cold and hot water

📝 Expected MCQ: Main chemical base of synthetic detergent? → Petroleum product

Working Mechanism

  • Like soap, detergents form micelles around dirt and grease
  • Can break down oily substances in hard water, which contains calcium and magnesium ions
  • Rinse easily without leaving residue

📝 Expected MCQ: Why do detergents work in hard water? → Do not form scum with Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions

Types of Detergents

1. Anionic Detergents

  • Most common, used in laundry powders
  • Examples: Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)

2. Cationic Detergents

  • Used as disinfectants and antiseptics
  • Examples: Benzalkonium chloride

3. Non-ionic Detergents

  • No charge; used in dishwashing and labs

📝 PYQ (BPSC): Which works in hard water—soap or detergent? → Detergent
📝 Expected MCQ: Which is biodegradable—soap or detergent? → Soap

Environmental Concern

  • Many detergents are non-biodegradable, leading to water pollution
  • Cause eutrophication → growth of algae in water bodies
  • Banned in many countries if phosphorus content is high

Bihar-Specific Relevance

  • In Bihar’s urban areas, detergents dominate for washing due to variable water quality
  • Used in flood-prone areas for disinfection and clothes cleaning
  • Awareness drives under Swachh Bharat and Nirmal Bharat include training on proper detergent use
  • Local detergent brands manufactured under rural entrepreneurship schemes like Udyami Yojana

📝 Expected MCQ: Bihar’s scheme promoting detergent production by small businesses? → Udyami Yojana

Common Detergent Brands in Bihar

  • Wheel, Nirma, Surf Excel, Ghari
  • SHG-made detergents under JEEViKA

Uses of Detergents

  • Cleaning clothes, utensils, glassware
  • Used in shampoos, body wash, and industrial cleaners
  • In labs for cleaning apparatus and glassware
  • In medicine as antiseptic cleansing agents

PYQs + Expected MCQs

📝 PYQ (BPSC): What is the advantage of detergents over soaps? → Effective in hard water
📝 Expected MCQ: What is the harmful effect of detergents in water bodies? → Eutrophication
📝 Expected MCQ: Which detergent compound is an antiseptic? → Benzalkonium chloride
📝 Expected MCQ: Which detergent is non-biodegradable? → Synthetic detergent with phosphate
📝 Expected MCQ: What do detergents form to remove dirt? → Micelles

Quick Revision Points

  • Detergents = synthetic surfactants, work in all water types
  • Types: Anionic, Cationic, Non-ionic
  • Work by forming micelles
  • Better than soaps in hard water
  • Not always biodegradable → cause water pollution
  • Bihar: Detergents used in flood zones, made under Udyami, JEEViKA
